A serious construction accident in Summers Corner has once again highlighted the dangers construction workers face on the job site. On the afternoon of Tuesday, May 20th, emergency responders rushed to a work zone on Clay Field Trail near Marsh Royal Street after a trench collapse left a construction worker with traumatic leg injuries.
At approximately 3:20 p.m., Dorchester County emergency crews were called to the scene after receiving reports that a worker was trapped underground. According to officials, the man was working inside a 10-foot-deep trench when it suddenly collapsed, pinning his legs beneath heavy soil.
First responders worked quickly to extricate the worker, whose lower extremities were buried and severely injured. He was transported to a local hospital for emergency treatment. At the time of the report, the severity of the injuries was unknown, but they were described as traumatic.
Trench collapses are one of the most dangerous hazards on construction sites. According to OSHA, even a trench just a few feet deep can become deadly if not properly reinforced. The weight of collapsing soil can exert thousands of pounds of force, making survival difficult and injuries severe.
Employers are required by law to follow strict safety regulations when workers are required to enter trenches, including:
- Providing trench boxes or shoring to prevent collapse
- Conducting regular safety inspections
- Ensuring safe entry and exit from the trench
When these precautions are not followed, serious injuries — or worse — can occur.
