Fatal Worksite Accident at South Carolina Lowe’s

A tragic workplace accident claimed the life of a construction worker on Sunday, June 22, in North Augusta, South Carolina. Authorities confirmed that 43-year-old Ray C. Straight was fatally injured while working as part of a paving crew in the parking lot of the Lowe’s Home Improvement store on Knox Avenue. Emergency personnel were called to the scene shortly after 5 p.m., where they discovered Straight pinned under a piece of heavy machinery.

Witness accounts and the incident report revealed that Straight had been standing on a rear-mounted ladder attached to the machinery when it began to reverse. The operator, reportedly unaware of Straight’s position, backed up the equipment, causing him to fall and become trapped beneath the moving track. First responders immediately initiated CPR upon freeing him, but despite their efforts, Straight sustained fatal trauma to his head and chest. This devastating loss underscores the ever-present dangers faced by construction and paving crews, especially when working around heavy machinery. Even on seemingly routine job sites, a single oversight or miscommunication can result in irreversible consequences for workers and their families.
