A tragic multi-vehicle collision on Interstate 20 in Lexington County has once again highlighted the devastating consequences that traffic accidents can have on South Carolina families.
Around 3:20 p.m. on Saturday, June 28th, four Harley-Davidson motorcycles were stopped on the right shoulder of eastbound I-20 near the Longs Pond Road overpass when a 2024 Chrysler suddenly veered off the road, striking all four bikes. The impact killed 57-year-old Kendall Lamar Walker, a resident of Augusta, Georgia. According to the Lexington County Coroner’s Office, Walker was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash and died at the scene.
Three other motorcycle riders were injured and transported to Prisma Health Richland in Columbia for treatment. Authorities confirmed that the Chrysler had three passengers in addition to the driver, but none sustained injuries. As the investigation continues, law enforcement has not yet determined why the Chrysler veered off the road.
Motorcycle crashes, particularly those involving stationary or law-abiding riders, often raise serious questions about driver awareness, road safety, and the responsibility of all motorists to remain alert. Tragically, South Carolina continues to see high numbers of roadway fatalities year after year. In 2023, there were 2,202 collisions involving motorcyclists on South Carolina’s roadways, 127 of them resulting in fatalities, according to the 2023 Traffic Collision Fact Book.
